About the Hand Hotel | Bed & Breakfast in Fairplay, Colorado
Nearly a century old, the Hand Hotel is steeped in history. The original Hand Hotel was built in 1931 by Jake and Jessie Hand, thus the name, Hand Hotel. Jessie furnished the hotel with western and Indian memorabilia from the South Park area. Her extensive arrowhead collection is on display in the South Park City Museum, located just down the street from the hotel. Most of the hotel rooms were furnished with hand-woven Indian rugs, as well as other historical artifacts.
What was it like at the Hand Hotel in the 1930s?
Perhaps, due to the interesting decor and Jessie and Jake’s hospitality, a steady clientele from the east kept the hotel booked months ahead. During their stays, guests were offered fishing and hunting excursions as well as day trips into the mountains. For breakfast, many people were pleased to find fresh trout on the menu, caught from the river every morning by Jessie.
The Hand Hotel Today
Through the years, the hotel was sold numerous times, each time remodeled, taking away the original character. Today, the new owners have completely stripped the building back to the original walls and have taken the hotel back in time to a period of 1890 to 1910. The entire decor of the hotel is western turn-of-the-century.
